RPS Press Release – Change of Secretary:

The Railway Photographic Society (RPS) wishes to announce that John Hillier has taken over as its Secretary following David Gibson’s reluctant decision to stand down from the role so that he can concentrate on some medical treatment that he needs.

John Hillier will be only the fourth Secretary in the Societies 101-year existence, it’s founder Maurice Earley serving as Secretary for 54 years from 1922 until he ‘retired’ the RPS in 1976. Stephen Crook and the RPS northern circuit members then formed the Rail Camera Club (RCC) with Stephen as Secretary, a post he held until his untimely death in 2011 after which David Gibson became Secretary, a position he has held for the past twelve years.

David Gibson remarks that his time as Secretary has been ‘one of the most fulfilling periods of my life, but many of the achievements in that time would not have happened without the dedicated and hard work of John Hillier, and I am confident that the RPS under John’s stewardship will be in very safe hands and will have a secure future. The 2018 RPS Photographic Exhibition at Locomotion, the first Young Railway Photographer of the Year Competition (YRPOTY) in 2022 and the associated publishing of three books are testimony to his hard work. Somehow, he found time to mastermind the latest overhaul of 45596 Bahamas!’

On behalf of the RPS John has been asked to organise a second YRPOTY Competition to coincide with the 200th Anniversary of Railway in 2025 and the National Railway Museum (NRM) will be making an announcement about this shortly.

The NRM commented that the RPS was instrumental in raising the standard of railway photography by circulating prints between members for comment and critique, a practice that it continues to this day. To mark the 100th Anniversary of the RPS in 2022, the RCC again became the Railway Photographic Society.
